In the ALS, Markham responds to an invitation from Russell, and promises his presence on January 24. The AMsS, also written at West New Brighton, N.Y. begins: "Next to the home, the tree-lined road and the wayside bridge have ever been dear and near to the heart of man."

California poet. Raised near Vacaville, became a schoolteacher in Coloma and later in Oakland. Became famous overnight with publication of "The Man with a Hoe," his protest against brutalization of labor, in "San Francisco Examiner" (January 15, 1899). Following this success Markham moved to New York where he scored another triumph with "Lincoln and Other Poems" (1901).
